Do’s and Don’ts
- Respect the privacy of every member and moderator. Your privacy is of the utmost importance to us. Every user is expected to keep their group discussions confidential. Although we cannot guarantee complete privacy, we enforce anonymity amongst members to protect everyone’s private information as much as possible.
- Be courteous to all group participants. Be respectful of differing points of view and avoid personal attacks on other users in all circumstances. Members and moderators alike should feel respected and safe to express themselves.
- Be punctual. It is essential for moderators to be punctual. The group session cannot begin until the moderator has entered the video chat room.
- Mute your smartphone, tablet, television and all other nearby devices. Not only are the sounds of these devices distracting to the group setting, but they can easily lead to outside communication during the group, which breaches the privacy of group members.
- Remain in one place during the call. Avoid walking around or moving your device during the call, as it is distracting to the group environment.
- Be aware of your video and microphone settings. Mute your microphone whenever you are not speaking — even if you are alone in the room. Background noise can be an annoying distraction and stifle any meeting’s flow. Conversely, check if your microphone is muted before delivering a two-minute monologue that no one will hear.
- While speaking, look into the camera instead of looking at yourself on the computer screen. It will help others on the call feel like you’re 100 percent engaged and present.
- Wear appropriate clothing. Dress just as you would attending an in-person group.
- Hold group sessions while in a public space. Groups must be held in a private setting. Attending your group from a public space is not only distracting to others, but it also breaches the privacy of every group member.
- Group Dynamics. Contact outside of the group disturbs the democratic environment of the group and can cause issues amongst members.
- Privacy. Your privacy is of the utmost importance to us. Although we cannot guarantee complete privacy, we enforce anonymity amongst members and moderators to protect everyone’s private information as much as possible.
- Communicate with anyone outside of the group during your session. We discourage members and moderators from calling, texting, using social media and emailing during the group.
- Check emails, text, or social media while on the video call. This also includes doing additional work beyond the call. It is easy for other participant’s to tell if you aren’t fully focused and present during the video call.
- Position your camera too low, too high or hooked onto a different monitor. Odd camera angles can be very distracting during video conference calls. Make sure your camera is eye level and on the monitor you plan to use for the conference.
- Smoke, drink, or consume any altering substance during your group session.
- Eat during the group.
- Delve into your own issues and concerns. Make sure to focus group conversations on your group members, rather than on yourself.
- Use overly explicit language. Moderators and members must avoid using crude or harsh language during their group sessions.
- Share explicit content. In order for support groups to be a safe and comfortable place for all members, moderators and members must not share violent or obscene images via screen sharing or chat.
